Before I fell asleep last night, I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my day off today.  There were a few things that I wanted to make, but I realized that without sprinkles, the outcome would be a little disappointing.  I kind of wanted to spend the whole day with Olive, so I didn't want to have to leave the apartment to make a run to the grocery store after something relatively trivial.

It kind of dawned on me that I could use a simple frosting recipe to make the sprinkles in any shape and color that I wanted and let them harden up.

Here's the recipe I came up with:

Homemade Sprinkles

2 c powdered sugar
4 T milk
1 t vanilla
food coloring
  • Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla into mixing bowl.
  • Divide into mugs and color the frosting to your liking.
  • Place each frosting color into sandwich bags and cut a teeny hole in the corner of the bag (the smaller, the better).
  •  Drop little dots onto a piece of wax paper and let the frosting set up-- this may take a few hours, but you can place it in the refrigerator or freezer to speed the process up.

I found that the smaller and the thinner the frosting dots were, the faster they set up and the nicer they looked.  I loved the way that the mint green, light pink, and purple sprinkles turned out, while the dark pink and white sprinkles weren't quite set when I popped them off of the wax paper, so they clumped together and got sticky.  I plan to store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.  Aren't they kind of pretty? :)
